16/05/2006 - The Commission appears before the Public Administration Select
Committee (PASC)
Lord Stevenson of Coddenham, the Right Honourable Lord Hurd of Westwell and
Angela Sarkis have appeared before the Public Administration Select
Committee (PASC) which has been taking evidence in public for its
inquiry into Ethics and Standards in Public Life. The session considered
propriety issues concerning the honours system and peerage nominations. It
provided an opportunity to ask the Appointments Commission how it
administers the system for vetting peerage nominations, what considerations
are taken into account and what information is required on nominees. It
also allowed the Committee to explore the structure and arrangements of
this part of the regulatory landscape following the transfer of
responsibilities from the Honours Scrutiny Committee to the Appointments
Commission and the desirability of further changes.
The following memorandum, explaining the Commission's
scrutiny procedures [102KB DOC], was provided
earlier for the PASC's consideration.
